When Southlake was incorporated in September 1956, the population was less than 500. People moving from cities to the rural atmosphere of Southlake caused phenomenal growth in the 1980's. During this time, Southlake became home to thousands of new residents looking for a more meaningful way of life. Today, Southlake's population is nearly 25,000. Although located in the heart of the metroplex, Southlake continues to enjoy a hometown atmosphere. With premium developments, stellar schools and active citizens, Southlake has reason to celebrate big in 2006. "This will be a great year to come together as a community to build friendships among neighbors, demonstrate pride in the city, and showcase the achievements which have made this a great city," said Mayor Wambsganss. Southlake's 50th anniversary is a historic opportunity to celebrate the past and the vision for the future. The Mayor and City Council proclaimed 2006 as a year of celebration on January 3 2006. Events are planned all year long for Southlake's golden anniversary. These include: gathering mementos from the community to be placed in a time capsule; dedication of a historical marker for the Dove Community site at Lonesome Dove and Dove Street; a giant birthday party with an ice cream social, street dance, and laser light show and a public art event celebrating Southlake and Texas history!. |
