Woodhaven

HISTORY

Woodhaven lies about six miles east of the Central Business District and includes parts of six original surveys, the 1859 Horace Robinson Survey, the 1871 John H. Connor Survey, the 1875 Geo. W. Main Survey, the 1863 P.E. Coleman Survey, the 1859 Russell Williams Survey, and the 1876 Edward Taylor Survey. It is bordered on the north by Randol Mill Road, the east by Loop 820, the south by I-30 and the west by Woodhaven Drive.

In 1856 Archibald Leonard built the first mill in the area. It became a community center where news was exchanged and goods traded while waiting for grain to be milled. This mill burned down in 1860, during a general unrest over abolition, but was rebuilt in 1862. In 1872 it was bought by W.A. Randol and operated until 1922. It finally burned down in 1933. The road past this mill became known as Randol Mill Road.

One of the early settlers in Woodhaven was W.J. Boaz in 1833, son of early Birdville settler Samuel Boaz. He and his family owned the land until selling it to Everett B. Comer in 1938. It changed hands several times before selling to the Woodhaven Development Co. in 1969.

NEIGHBORHOOD DESCRIPTION

Large homes surround the Woodhaven Country Club golf course, many include pools and rear entry attached garages. The homes must have more than 2,000 square feet and underground utilities. Styles of the homes range from modern to neo-eclectic to neo-classical, in one and two story plans.

A major part of Woodhaven is occupied by the Woodhaven Country Club. The curving and hilly streets provide good views of the area. There are a number of town homes, apartments and golf villas near the country club.

Another exclusive residential development on the northern edge of Woodhaven, north of Randol Mill Road, is Riverbend Estates.
